Stop Asian Hate

A statement from YIMBY Action

It has been two weeks since the shooting in Atlanta and days since the attack on an elderly Asian woman in New York. Let us not forget.

YIMBY Action stands in solidarity with our Asian siblings and categorically denounces the hate expressed towards them, be it verbal, physical, mental, or emotional. The murder of six Asian women in Atlanta, Georgia, is undeniably a hate crime. We honor them by stating their names: Xiaojie Tan, Daoyou Feng, Hyun Jung Grant, Yong Ae Yue, Suncha Kim, and Soon Chung Park.

We stand with the racial and social justice movement and demand justice for the lives that were taken. We call upon our elected leaders to pass laws that protect us because we know guns make hate deadlier.

We also acknowledge our racist and anti-Asian past. From the Page Act of 1875, the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 to the Japanese internment camps during WWII and redlining, our country has a history of anti-Asian policy. We are committed to putting an end to continuing impacts of our racist past.

Words are where we start, but they are insufficient. Antiracism must be incorporated into every part of our society. As we fight for fair housing, we must take action for justice in every aspect of our organizing and every part of our government. With this statement, we reaffirm our commitment to creating a society free from hate, racism, sexism, misogyny, and women’s objectification.
